First Breath

deep-breath

From Brian Bantum’s The Death of Race: Building a New Christianity in a Racial World: “The resurrected body of Christ breathed his first breath and as he breathed, he breathed as us and on our behalf. Jesus had been slowly walking into our humanity, into the shape and contingency of our lives. The resurrection is a pouring out, a reversal. His first breaths in the tomb are our new breaths as new creatures. His first steps are the steps we will take out of our tombs, out of our graves, out of the deaths society has tried to hang around our necks. The stone is split and even the word “death” has new meaning in his body. His new life makes a new life for us.”
